Doodle Wars #1 Our first game/devlog

How we started making our first game

So, we finished some unity tutorials and started to think what next. We thought that we could try to make our first game, but we had no ideas about what game we want to make. Our only thought was that it should be something in 2D. So we opened blank project in unity and started trying out different things without much prior thought. We somehow decided that it should be top-down because it will be easier to make some basic art.

We created a player (just a circle) that moves around, than we added enemies (another circles) that follow the player. Then we wanted to create textures for player and enemies. Still, we did not have any idea about the theme of the game, so we opened drawing software and started doodling. And that is how we ended with the idea of Doodle Wars.

About Doodle Wars

It is a top down shooter game. You control a doodle and you are destroying enemy doodles, that are trying to get you. Sometimes a boss will pop up and it will complicate your doodle life a bit.

By destroying enemies you level up your character and for obtained levels you can buy some upgrades and progress further. The game itself has no deeper meaning and will become repetitive after a while. There is no end goal, just endless shooting.

Development

It is our first game, so basically we had almost nothing planned ahead. We did things as they came to our minds. We wanted to have fun and learn something new.

In the development process we came across some challenges, for example.. everything. Everything was a bit of a challenge since we are absolute amateurs.. yet :) . Everything from basic player movement, which still feels weird, to upgrading system. So it is pointless to describe everything that was challenging, otherwise it would be a very long post. In short, we solved everything that we wanted to and we had fun doing it.  We have drawn all pictures in the game and made a main menu soundtrack (if we can call that bit of mingled sounds a soundtrack). For in game sounds we have used free unity sound pack from unity asset store.

We hope that you will have at least a bit of fun playing our game. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know what do you think about it. The same applies in the case you find a bug or some mistake, thank you
